Questions

What is a typical week like?
A typical week in the AVID elective involves curriculum on Mondays and Wednesdays. Tutorials take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Motivational activities take place on Fridays.

Can my child stay in AVID even if his/her grades go down?
Just as AVID students must interview in order to gain admission to the program, they must also maintain satisfactory attendance, academic grades, and conduct to remain in the program. Since AVID students are leaders in the school, they are expected to be respectful, on time, prepared, and to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. If an AVID student earns a D or an F on a report card, he/she is automatically placed on probation. In order to remain in the program, the student must earn a C or better in that class by the end of the following grading period, or be dismissed from the program.

How can parents help?
Parents are an integral key to the success of their children. Parents are expected to participate in regularly scheduled parent workshops in order to gain a better understanding of what AVID is all about. Giving parents this information will increase home to school communication. If parents and teachers work together, students are more likely to be successful in school. You are the biggest "cheerleader" for your son or daughter!

AVID is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students - especially the least served students in the academic middle - will succeed in rigorous curriculum, will enter mainstream activities of the school, will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and will become the educated and responsible participants and leaders of tomorrow. There are many benefits to being recognized as an outstanding AVID site. The students will have the opportunity to gain incomparable experience: representing the AVID program and ideals, gaining the confidence to speak in public, having the opportunity to meet elected officials and community leaders, and participating as one of the model programs in an international organization. The school staff has the opportunity to participate in excellent staff development, both Summer Institute strands as well as local Path training in the content areas. The school community can share in the pride of being a nationally recognized site.
