Marine Science Station:

Is owned and operated by the
Citrus County School System.  Facilities include a laboratory classroom, lecture lodge, two dormitories, museum aquarium,
as well as four workboats, canoes, docks, a 50 ft. observation tower, and nature trails. The station is located on a 15 acre marsh hammock  5 miles west of Crystal River and State Road 44.  It is surrounded by the Salt River to the north and tidal marsh on the other sides. The river provides easy access by boat to the Crystal River, coastal estuaries and the Gulf of Mexico.  Staff include: Mr. Hugh Adkins, Director of Marine Science Station and Mr. Earnie Olsen, teacher.

Offers middle and high school students a summer opportunity to combine academic studies and recreational activities in a unique and motivating setting. The five day residential camp sessions held at the Marine Science Station in Crystal River are each designed for 25-30 students completing grades 6th or 7th grades as well as students completing 9th, 10th, and 11th grade for the high school session.  Current 7th graders will be given preference.

 

Program of Study

Camp Citrus offers a variety of activities designed to heighten students' knowledge and appreciation of water, water-related resources and protection of our unique and fragile aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Academic study will include:
     Marine life in area estuaries
     Specimen collections
     Fish population counts
     Plankton net drags
     Water quality testing
     Hydrology
     Water management

Students may also participate in:
      Canoeing
      Swimming
      Snorkeling
