Welcome to FCE's Library Media Center! Mrs. Kay Meahl, Library Media Specialist
Helpful Information for Teachers, Parents and Students... Take a leap into Reading......
Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) is a statewide, eight month reading motivation program for students in grades 3-8. More than 1,000 schools across Florida participate every year. The program encourages students to read for personal satisfaction, to help in understanding, to enjoy life through experiences with literature, to develop an awareness of good current literature for children and young people, and to give recognition to those who write the books.
Each year, members of the Florida Reading Association (FRA) nominate eight titles they consider some of the best picture books that have been published within the last few years. The winner of the FRA Children's Book Award is chosen by Florida students in grades Pre-K through 2. Students must have heard at least five of the eight books on the list to vote for their favorite. Mrs. Meahl, our Media Specialist, reads all eight of the books to students in grades K-2 as they come to the library for their media fine arts class. Votes are compiled and sent to the FRA. The author of the title receiving the most votes receives the annual FRA Children's Book Award. Use this helpful link to access Grolier Encyclopedia's Online database!
