School wide reading strategies as selected by the Literacy Team

Pre-Reading: Activating background knowledge through read-aloud and prediction

During Reading: Marginal note taking using a graphic organizer

Post-Reading: One-sentence summaries

Reading Strategies
  1. Activate or give the students background knowledge before they read.

  2. Pull out the vocabulary words and have the students work with them either by using a graphic organizer or oral method.

  3. Have the students write short or one-sentence summaries for each chunk of material. Discuss the summaries.

  4. Have the students complete a 3-2-1 summary organizer for the reading passages and discuss.

  5. Have the students identify the main idea of each paragraph and 2-3 supporting details. Remind them that this applies to writing also.

  6. Ask the students to identify the author's purpose in writing the passages. What did he/she want them to know and remember? Why?

  7. Ask the students to answer higher order questions orally so others will hear the responses. (Stress Inference)

  8. Have students identify information from charts, graphs, and other resources.

School-wide Word of the Day

The LHS Literacy Team of staff members felt that due to the importance of vocabulary in all content areas, we should have a school-wide initiative. Research states that it takes approximately seven contacts with a word in order to make it your own. The team decided that if each teacher would present the word of the day as well as the morning show, afternoon announcements, TA 1 bulletin board and marquee, we would have seven to eight exposures to each word. The words are selected by members of each department. They are given to their department representative and then sent to Margaret Williams, our Literacy Coach. She selects words from each content area and tries to have FCAT, SAT-ACT, AP, and Character words in each list.
