Mile Long Reading Contest

This year students can participate in a contest being run in the media center.  It is called the Mile Long Reading Contest.  We started the contest the first week of school when students were introduced to the contest rules during orientation.  The way it works is that students take the Reading Counts quiz for any book that they read having a quiz.  Each book has a predetermined point value based on book length and reading level.  Although the majority of the books read are RC books with available quizzes, there is an alternative activity for non RC books.  All points per grade level are added together with the ultimate goal being to reach 25,000 points/1 mile.

The contest stands with the following results:

1st place:  8th Grade at 8/10 of a mile (22,101 pts.)

2nd place: 6th grade at 5/10 of a mile (13,638 pts.)

3rd place: 7th Grade at 2/10 of a mile (5105 pts.)

More information about this contest can be received by contact Mrs. Riddle in the LMS Media Center.

We need your help!

We would like to have Alane Ferguson, author of the Christopher Killer Series come to our school January 31, 2012.  In order for her to come, we need to raise $600.00.  Please help us by supporting a

Scholastic Mini Book Fair

on December 6 - 8, 2011.

The fair will be open on December 6th till 6:00 PM and 7th & 8th from 8:00 AM to 2:45 PM.

Books make great Christmas, Hanukah, or Kwanzaa presents.  Not to mention a book fair gift certificate is a great way to show your student's teachers your appreciation for all they do.  Please stop in or let your students shop to help us out!

Students now have access to 44,060 quizzes in the Reading Counts Program.  To determine which books have quizzes, search for the book title on the Reading Counts Web site.  Books leveled 6th grade up should be added to our database.

LMS has strived over the last five years to improve the quality of our media collection.  We have made improvement but are not where we want to be yet.  With the collective help of LMS SAEC, LMS NJHS, administrators, staff, students, and parents we have made tremendous improvement. However, we are not finished yet! So when you support your students participation in book fairs, homeroom contests, and club activities you are not only helping your child now but all the students and many students to come.   Thank you in advance for your continued support of the media center.

Sunshine State Young Reader Program

The 2011-2012 list is available. Stop by the media center to pick up a list and check one out.  Stay tuned for information about the SSYR awards program.

Students - Please note this change for this year's awards program.  In order for the book to count, you must take the Reading Counts quiz and pass with a 70% or better!
