In the 2011/2012 school year budget, our district used $5 million out of the reserves (fund balance) to cover the budget shortfall. Through long range planning, we planned for this transition year knowing the stimulus money was only appropriated for two years. If the funding levels remain the same for the 2012/2013 school year, the school district will have to make budget reductions in the amount of $5 million.
I formed a budget committee to solicit ideas, thoughts and concerns about the budget reductions. Approximately 35 staff members, including teachers from all levels, support staff and administrators met to brainstorm ideas on how to reduce the budget by $5 million.
The committee was presented the budget and its framework and then the individual members posted ideas for budget reductions. Once all ideas were collected, committee members scored the ideas on a rubric from 0-15, with 0 being the least impact to student success and 15 being the most impact. The scores have now been prioritized from least to most impact and these recommendations will now be presented to the School Board.
In the link on the left side of this page, you will see the Budget 101 presentation as well as the budget rubrics and the scores with the priority list.
Although we are looking at more tough times to come, I do appreciate everything you do and your willingness to make each day a positive learning experience for our kids.
