Spelling
Your child will be
given 20 spelling words plus 5 challenge words for each
story in our reading anthology. Spelling tests will be
given on Fridays or the last day of the week. Some of the words will be tested
in sentence dictation form to help with writing. Please practice with your child at home with the new
words, while remembering to review and practice the previous lists.
Where can you find the spelling words?:
1.A list of all spelling words for the year will be
sent home in August (if you've misplaced it, please just let me know).
2.You can access them from this webpage by
theme/Lesson #. 3.They will also be listed in
the daily FROGS binder for quick reference.
Don't forget, games like Hangman, Scrabble, Boggle, Scattergories, etc. help
sharpen your child's spelling and word making skills while your whole family
enjoys!!!
Here are a few other fun
ideas and ways to practice the spelling words. You are not required to do them,
but they offer a more interesting way of practicing spelling words outside of
writing them 5 or 10 times each.

SPELLING
PRACTICE IDEAS
-
"Word
detective" - have your child use old newspapers, magazines, junk
mail, etc. to find and highlight the spelling words (great
for high-frequency words, too!)
-
Spelling word
concentration - have your child write the spelling words two times each,
cut out in rectangular fashion, turn them over face-down, and match.
-
Create new and
funny sentences for each word. Take turns being the writer and the
dictator.
-
Spelling scrabble
- write letters from spelling words on paper, cut out, and play scrabble. (if
possible, use letters from real scrabble game)
-
Have them type
them on a typewriter or on a computer using different font styles.
-
Put
spelling words in alphabetical order
Write
new words from base word (i.e.
cook - cooks, cooker, cooking)
