Lecanto High School Varsity Basketball Team is Undefeated

Lecanto High School’s varsity basketball team has been unstoppable this season, capturing the attention of Citrus County and beyond with their undefeated record. The Panthers have surged past every opponent, showcasing skill, teamwork, and determination that have set them apart as one of the most formidable teams in the Gulf Coast Eight athletic conference.

So far, the season has been a testament to the Panthers’ hard work and relentless drive. Each game has demonstrated depth and versatility, with standout performances from seasoned seniors and emerging first-year students. Whether executing precision plays on offense or locking down the competition with stifling defense, Lecanto has proven they are a team to be reckoned with. If the Panthers stay on track, this will mark their fifth consecutive 20-win season.

“My goal this season was to improve defense and have fun playing the game. I think [my play style] evolved throughout the years. Training for other sports helped me play better for basketball,” Kwantace Tez Joseph, position, said.

One of the hallmarks of the Panthers’ success is their team chemistry. The players’ ability to communicate and anticipate each other’s movements has created a seamless flow on the court. This cohesion and excellent coaching have allowed Lecanto to adapt to different play styles and overcome tough challenges.

"These kids have been playing together for most of their lives. They're just continuing what they’ve done in the past. In the first year, they saw success. Sophomore year, they saw success. I expected nothing different this year, and if I’m being honest, I expect nothing different next year,” Timothy Henson, assistant coach, said.

The Panthers’ journey to an undefeated season has not been without obstacles. Close matchups against opponents such as Nature Coast High School tested their resolve, but Lecanto rose each time. These victories were not just wins, they were statements of the team’s grit and resilience.

“When we're all playing together, passing, rebounding, doing all the things we need, doing what the coaches say, we just win every game,” Braylen Moore, position, said.

This season has become a landmark moment in Lecanto High School’s athletic history. The varsity basketball team’s undefeated record is a testament to the players' dedication, their coaches' guidance, and their fans' unwavering support. Speaking of history, the 2024 FACA player of the year, Junior JT Tipton, has surpassed his 2000-point mark and is aiming at the Lecanto all-time career scoring record.

“Does he encourage you? Does he say, oh, y'all suck, get off the court? No, he makes sure that he pushes us at practice. Our coaches ensure that our energy is good before we practice, ensuring that we're focused and paying attention,” Noah Meyer, position, said.

As the Panthers set their sights on championship glory, one thing is certain: this season will be remembered as a shining example of what Lecanto High School can achieve when talent, teamwork, and determination come together. They cannot wait to see the Citrus County community in the stands supporting their historic run.
