Citrus High School Honors Antonio Hicks with Memorial Jersey Unveiling
By Student Writer: Bonnie Bunn
Citrus High School came together in a powerful tribute to honor the life and legacy of Antonio Hicks, unveiling his framed jersey at Glory Days in a heartfelt ceremony. Hicks, a beloved student and athlete, left a lasting impact on the school and community, and this event served as a testament to his enduring memory.
A Legacy That Lives On
Principal Mr. Kahler emphasized the deep connection Antonio had with both the school and the community, stating, “Antonio was an influential part of this school and had an impact on a lot of students and staff members. When he passed away, it hurt, you know, it still hurts. But we have a motto—‘Once you’re a Hurricane, you’re always a Hurricane.’” The tribute aimed to not only honor Antonio but to ensure that his name would be remembered for years to come.
Glory Days, a local restaurant, played a key role in this memorial. The establishment had long wanted to display Antonio’s jersey, recognizing the significance he held within the community. With the help of Coach Franklin and Mr. Kahler, a jersey was secured, embroidered with Hicks’ name, and framed for the unveiling. The display now serves as a permanent reminder of Antonio’s influence.
A Night of Remembrance
The event saw an overwhelming turnout, with Antonio’s mother, Ms. Harrison, bringing 20 to 30 family members and friends to celebrate his life. Glory Days set up a special table for the family, ensuring they could dine together in his honor. The emotional evening was filled with shared memories, reflections, and a sense of unity as those who knew Antonio best gathered to pay tribute.
Antonio Hicks Scholarship: A Future of Opportunities
In addition to the jersey unveiling, a recipient of the Antonio Hicks Scholarship, Blayne Macias, was recognized during the event. The scholarship, created in Antonio’s name, aims to support students in achieving their goals—just as Antonio would have wanted.
“All students have an opportunity to succeed,” Mr. Kahler shared. “Whatever their definition of success, Antonio and his family will always want that person to be successful. For years to come, the recipients of this scholarship will be honored to receive it and, when times are tough, I hope they’ll remember that Antonio never gave up on anything.”
A Message to the Community
Mr. Kahler hopes that the students and staff of Citrus High take away an important lesson from this tribute: to cherish each day and express love and appreciation for those around them. “Make sure you tell everybody how much you love them on a daily basis because you never know what tomorrow may bring.”
The event not only honored Antonio but also strengthened the bond between Citrus High School and the local community. “The stronger the school gets, the stronger the community gets,” Kahler said. “Memorializing Antonio continues to strengthen that bond.”
The turnout and support were no surprise to those who knew Antonio. Even former students who no longer attend Citrus High came back to participate in the celebration of his life. His memory lives on—not just in the halls of Citrus High, but in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Remembering Antonio
As Citrus High moves forward, Antonio Hicks’ legacy remains a guiding force in the school’s values of unity, perseverance, and community. His framed jersey at Glory Days stands as a powerful reminder that once a Hurricane, always a Hurricane.
