Mrs. Lewis and the Girls Citrus Weightlifting team
GC8 Coach of the Year: Mrs. Lewis Goes Out on Top
By Student Writer: Bonnie Bunn
Mrs. Lewis, head coach of the Citrus High School Girls Weightlifting team, is closing out her coaching career with a well-deserved honor: GC8 Coach of the Year—a fitting recognition for a leader who built her team on strength, dedication, and heart.
The award, voted on by fellow coaches, holds special meaning for Lewis. “It felt really nice to be recognized for the hard work that’s gone into building the Citrus program,” she said.
A seasoned weightlifter with over 15 years of personal experience, Lewis stepped into the coaching role when the opportunity arose and made an immediate impact. Under her guidance, the team became known not just for their athletic success, but for their culture of support and sportsmanship.
“Before every meet, I remind the girls that we represent Citrus High School,” she said. “That means being supportive of our teammates and also of athletes from other schools. It’s a tradition we’re proud of.”
Her training style struck a balance between discipline and care. While practices were held daily, Lewis made space for the team to bond and decompress. “We’d mix in something fun, like everyone telling a joke or taking turns saying something positive about each teammate,” she said. “It helped keep the energy light and reminded them that we’re not just building strength—we’re building each other up, too.”
Lewis says her team’s commitment was what set them apart this season. “They showed up ready to work every day. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
Among her favorite memories are the regional and state meets, where the team surpassed the goals they had set. “Those moments were especially meaningful,” she said.
Though this season marks her final one as head coach, Lewis plans to stay connected to the program. “I still want to be involved. These girls are going to keep pushing forward, and I’ll be there cheering them on.”
As Mrs. Lewis steps away from coaching, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence, community, and lasting impact—one that will continue to shape the Citrus High Girls Weightlifting program for years to come.
