CITRUS COUNTY, FL – Citrus High School proudly announces Michael Egan as its Teacher of the Year and Sabrina Paquin as School-Related Employee of the Year, recognizing two individuals whose dedication to students and the school community has made a lasting impact.
Michael Egan: A Career Dedicated to Student Success
Michael Egan, a teacher of AP Literature and Composition, English 4 Honors, and Intensive Reading, has been inspiring students since the start of his career. His journey into teaching was influenced by his high school English teacher, Mrs. Murphy, whose kindness and encouragement planted a seed. “She was a very nice teacher, and I loved her class,” Egan recalls. “After high school, when I was uncertain about my path, I visited her, and she encouraged me to consider teaching.” That simple encouragement led to more than a career—it sparked a passion for teaching and guiding students through their academic journeys.
Egan began his career in Tampa’s inner-city schools, gaining valuable experience before finding a home at Citrus High. Teaching at Citrus High became even more meaningful when his daughter, Amanda, joined his classroom. “Having her here at school with me has been an amazing experience,” he said. “It’s incredibly special to share this part of my life with her.”
Being named Teacher of the Year is an honor that humbles Egan, who praises his colleagues as equally deserving. “There are so many great teachers here; I feel like I’m just part of the team,” he said. He finds fulfillment in graduation ceremonies, a day that holds immense meaning. "It’s not because they’re leaving," he explained, "but because it’s the culmination of all their hard work. It’s like winning the Super Bowl or the Stanley Cup.”
A key influence in Egan’s growth as an educator has been his colleagues, particularly Mr. Bingham, a fellow teacher whose classroom he visits to observe effective teaching methods. “I’m friends with Mr. Bingham, and I go over there just to watch his class and see the way he works with his kids,” Egan shared. “Each teacher has a different style, and I think observing each other is one of the best ways to learn.” He applies this philosophy of continuous growth by reflecting on his own daily teaching, always seeking ways to improve and better connect with his students.
Egan’s goals extend beyond academics—he hopes his students develop respect and empathy, learning to appreciate diverse perspectives. “We’re all different, and we come from different places. Even if you disagree with someone, it’s still possible to find common ground.” He believes that building connections is crucial, and he does so by getting to know each student’s unique interests, whether they’re into sports, art, or gaming. “When you can make those connections, working together becomes much easier,” he said.
Sabrina Paquin: A Legacy of Service to Citrus High
Sabrina Paquin has been honored as Citrus High’s School-Related Employee of the Year, recognized for her critical role as Mr. Kahler’s secretary, where she assists with the school’s daily operations. Paquin follows a family legacy of service in education—her parents both worked for the Citrus County school district, and her sister and husband are also employees of the district. She started as a secretary in Student Services, quickly discovering her passion for helping students and staff. Today, her role involves scheduling, budgeting, and managing various tasks that keep the school running smoothly.
This year’s graduating class holds a special place in Paquin’s heart, as it’s the first group she’s worked with for all four years, from their freshman year to now. Graduation day will be especially meaningful as she watches these students celebrate the completion of their high school journey. “It’s a privilege to hand out diplomas to students I’ve seen grow over four years. I feel lucky to be part of such an important milestone in their lives,” she shared.
Paquin emphasizes the importance of a supportive, positive environment and values her team, who make each day enjoyable. “Having a great group of coworkers makes all the difference. It’s important to have fun together.” Paquin also believes in meeting students where they are, reminding them that “it’s okay to make mistakes, and tomorrow is another day to try again.”
Honoring Their Commitment and Passion
Both Michael Egan and Sabrina Paquin’s work goes beyond their daily duties—they embody the spirit of Citrus High, creating a supportive and inspiring environment. As they continue to serve the school community, their influence will surely leave a legacy. The Citrus High community is proud to honor Egan and Paquin, who help make the school a place of learning, growth, and support for all.
