Relief Could Be in Sight for Citrus County’s Ongoing Cell Service Issues
Citrus County, FL - August 27, 2024 — Citrus County residents may soon see an improvement in cell service coverage, thanks to a new initiative discussed during today’s special school board special meeting and workshop.
Superintendent Sam Himmel introduced a master lease agreement with Alternative Energy Solutions, Inc. (AES) that could repurpose six existing monopoles on school district property to serve as cell service towers.
The monopoles, originally erected in 2004, were intended to support the district’s computer network. However, rapid advancements in technology rendered these structures obsolete for their initial purpose. Superintendent Himmel’s proposal aims to breathe new life into these towers, using them to enhance cell phone signal strength across the county—a persistent issue for many Citrus County residents.
During the meeting, representatives from AES, Inc., along with school board attorney Wes Bradshaw and Director of Planning and Growth Management Chuck Dixon, addressed various questions from the board members as they reviewed the proposed agreement. The repurposing of the monopoles could provide a much-needed boost to the area’s cellular infrastructure, which has struggled to keep up with increasing demand.
Superintendent Himmel is expected to present an updated contract for consideration at the upcoming school board meeting on September 10th. If approved, this initiative could mark a significant step forward in improving connectivity for Citrus County’s students, staff, and residents alike.
