A Message from Superintendent of Schools Sandra "Sam" Himmel

As we prepare for another school year, I want to share with you a change we have made regarding school safety. School safety has always been and will continue to be a top priority of the School District. After review of the enhanced lockdown procedures by the District's Safety Committee, which is comprised of school and sheriff's office staff, it was unanimously recommended and supported by the School Board that all schools implement the following lockdown procedure.

The new enhanced lockdown procedure to be implemented at all district facilities is referred to as A.L.I.C.E., which is an acronym for:

A - Alert
L - Lockdown
I - Inform
C - Counter
E - Evacuate

You can read more about the ALICE protocol by visiting www.alicetraining.com.

Research has shown the traditional “lockdown” method, which directs staff and students to hide and shelter in place, is not the best practice in a situation involving an armed intruder. The ALICE procedure provides our students and staff with options to respond to an armed intruder based on information that is available to them.

Within the first weeks of school, all principals will share information with your child regarding the ALICE protocol, followed up with individual classroom discussions. These conversations will be age appropriate with an opportunity for students to ask any questions.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child's school administrator or the District's School Safety Specialist at 352-726-1931, ext. 2270.
