Hurricane Ian Updates

(Tuesday, September 27, 2022) 11am STORM UPDATE:

After further discussion with our partners at our Emergency Operations Center, and with the County utilizing four of our schools for storm shelters, the decision has been made to close schools for Friday, September 30th.  After-school programs and extra-curricular activities are canceled beginning this afternoon through Friday.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate Hurricane Ian.

Shelter Information:

Our school district plays a vital role in the EOC's response to storms such as helping to organize and open storm shelters at many of our schools.

Below is a list of shelters opening Tuesday at 6 p.m.

• Forest Ridge Elementary School (Special Needs) - 2927 North Forest Ridge Blvd., Hernando, FL 34442

• Lecanto Primary (Pet Friendly) - 3790 W Educational Path, Lecanto, FL 34461

• Central Ridge Elementary School (General Population) - 185 West Citrus Springs Blvd., Citrus Springs, FL 34434

• Citrus High School (General Population) - 600 West Highland Blvd., Inverness, FL 34452

Public shelters should be an option of last resort.  Citizens should make all preparations to shelter with family or friends and exhaust all other options before utilizing a public shelter.

(Monday, September 26, 2022) 12pm STORM UPDATE:

Citrus County Schools is working closely with the Citrus County Emergency Operations Center to prepare for the potential impacts of Hurricane Ian.

After the most recent emergency operations meeting, it has been determined to close schools Wednesday, September 28th, and Thursday September 29th. After-school programs and extra-curricular activities are cancelled beginning Tuesday, September 27th through Thursday, September 29th. As we continue to monitor the storm, we will update you as decisions are made.

Many factors are considered when EOC activates shelters, and our school district plays a vital role in the EOC's response.

We encourage you to stay up to date with local news reports; we will continue to update you through Skyward emails, texts, and phone calls, as necessary. You can also monitor the impact on schools here and our district and school social media pages.

(Sunday, September 25, 2022) 7pm STORM UPDATE:

We are closely monitoring the approach of Tropical Storm Ian.

The National Hurricane Center continues to warn residents in west-central Florida that the forecast track is uncertain, however Ian is expected to become a hurricane Monday or Tuesday.

We are working closely with our partners at the Citrus County Emergency Management Operations Center and will follow their direction on closures and shelters.

Right now - given the path of the storm - no decision has been made regarding shelters, which means our schools will operate normally. As decisions are made for the remainder of the week, families will be notified as soon as possible via our call-out system, texts, district and school websites, and on our social media channels.
