Students Show Off Skills at Math Field Day Competition
Inverness, Florida - Lecanto Middle School and Seven Rivers Christian School took home overall winning honors in the 2024 Citrus County School District Math Field Day Competition on Saturday, March 2. This year, Citrus High School hosted the competition.
It was an exciting day as middle and high school students showcased their skills, engaged in teamwork, and challenged themselves competing for their chance to take home the top prize. The day is comprised of two sessions, one for middle school students and one for high school students. Each session gave the students 1 1/2 hours to complete all the questions encouraging critical thinking and creativity. Students worked as a team to figure out the answers.
The awards ranged from first place to third in fields such as algebra and geometry, calculus, and statistics. First place received a medallion, and all team members got a T-shirt. Second and third places all earned ribbons.

In addition to the competitions, Math Field Day also celebrates artistic talent through its annual t-shirt design contest. Jeffrey Thomas, an eighth-grade student from Citrus Springs Middle School, captured the essence of this year's theme, "Ready, Set, Accelerate," with his captivating artwork created entirely on an iPad. His design not only adorned the event's official t-shirts but also served as a visual representation of the participants' enthusiasm and determination.
Special thanks are extended to District Math Specialist, Mindy Melito; Director of Specialty Programs, Darrick Buettner; as well as to all our students’ teachers, and families for their support of our students. Thank you also to all the teachers and educators from each of the schools who volunteered their Saturday morning to score/grade the event for the students.
Big thanks to our event sponsors, the Citrus County Education Foundation and Suncoast Credit Union for making the event possible. As always, we appreciate your partnership.
