School lunch heros

The Citrus County School District’s Food and Nutrition Team strives to make lunchtime the favorite part of every student’s day.  This team has made sure our students are well fed with delicious and nutritious meals every day.  From their friendly greetings and the love they dish out with every student’s meal, to how they encourage kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, our school nutrition professionals are true heroes.

On Friday, May 3, the Citrus County School District is encouraging students to say THANK YOU and show their appreciation for their school nutrition staff as part of National School Lunch Hero Day.

Between preparing healthy meals, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, our Food Services Team has a lot on their plate.  Citrus County Food and Nutrition Services proudly serves over 1.6 million student lunches and over 775,960 student breakfasts annually.

Under updated federal nutrition standards, school nutrition staff offer a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and fat-free or low-fat milk with school lunch. Cafeterias must also limit the sodium, calories, and saturated fat in each meal. Our CCSB nutrition professionals have been mixing up the menu and getting students excited about trying these healthier choices.

“Our Food Services staff is a team of dedicated, hard-working, generous people who work hard throughout the year,” says Superintendent Sam Himmel. “School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes for their dedication to fueling our students for success.”
